Weather At A Glance -
the Bushnell Golf FXi

I’m the first to admit the “whiz-
bang” of technology, specially
as it applies to golf,
fascinates me. Laser range
finders, GPS yardage
devices, club head CAD, 4-
piece multi-layer balls, etc.,
each has an attraction
and as long we’re on the
topic, the new Bushnell Golf
FXi is technology neatly
applied. Continue reading...

News Commentary Opinion
USGA championships seldom are held in Florida. The Sunshine State
certainly doesn’t lack worthy venues but our national golf association
conducts it’s championships in the summer time and Florida, in the
summer, can be…well, pretty hot.

This year however the United States Golf Association Women’s Mid-
Amateur Championship moves to Florida October 3-8 in the hope fall
temperatures will be more moderate and the golf course selected has as
one of its owners the “Open Doctor,” Rees Jones.

Golden Hills Golf and Turf Club near Ocala in rolling horse country first
opened for play in 1964. The original layout was done by Charles Pace and
Lee Popple but in 2004 Jones did a major rebuild of the aging course.

Effectively he created a new course – lots of new bunkers, reconfigured
tees, additional drainage, and reconstructed greens. The character of the
previous course was maintained though, with fairways winding their way
over the hilly terrain and lined with old oak trees. Many of the greens are
elevated and according to the USGA will putt to a Stimpmeter of 10.5 to 11
during the competition. The Women’s Mid-Am players will tee it up on a par-
72 test playing at just under 6,200 yards.

In the 2009 Mid-Am field are Joan Higgins of Glendora, Calif., last years
winner and Meghan Bolger Stasi now living in Oakland Park, Fla., the
champion in 2007 and 2008. A number other past champions and several
current or former Curtis Cup players are expected to play.

The Women’s Mid-Am for players 25 years of age and older, began in 1987
at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. And over the years top-rated
amateurs have been victors such as Cindy Scholefield, who won in 1987
and Carole Semple Thompson who has won twice.

Along with Jones, Golden Hills is owned by former Castro Convertibles, Inc.
CEO Bernadette Castro and her family. Castro is well known to golf fans
from her previous position as New York State Commissioner of Parks and
Recreation. In her role as commissioner she had a big part in the U.S. Open
being played for the first time on a public golf course, Bethpage Black, in
2002.

Golden Hills designer Jones is son of Hall of Fame architect Robert Trent
Jones, Sr. and brother of another world-renown architect, Robert Trent, Jr.
The number of courses he has to his credit runs into the hundreds but his
reputation as the “Open Doctor” is a result of his work renovating courses
prior to holding the U.S. Open. The list includes Baltusrol’s Lower Course,
Bethpage Black, Pinehurst #2, Torrey Pines-South Course and site of next
year’s Open, Congressional.
