TMaG Tour Burner - Performance Technology
You Shouldn’t Ignore
May 1, 2008 – Yes, as a member of that journalistic category “golf media” I
get he opportunity to hit all the latest balls and clubs and yes, I have my
favorites and yes, when TaylorMade Golf introed the Burner driver last year I
played with it and thought it was great. But (you knew there was a “but”
coming), after five rounds with TMaG’s Tour Burner the old Burner is in
storage.
Utilizing a design where the crown is smaller than the sole gives the Tour
Burner a crown weight saving of 12% allowing more weight to be relocated
lower which means the center of gravity is lower, that in turn gives higher ball
launch which can provide more distance.
TMaG pioneered the use of movable weights rather than jumping on the
‘square head’ band wagon as the way to enhance driver performance and
cut a wide swath in the driver category providing both distance gains and
forgiveness. The Burner line doesn’t use moveable weights instead the
head shape is triangular making the head very stable at impact and
combined with the successful ‘Inverted Cone’ behind the club face it makes
for even more forgiveness. Put another way the ball still goes when hit off
center a little.
A 60-gram 45½ inch tip stiff shaft and light weight grip complete the
package. As Sean Toulon, executive vice president of innovation and product
design says, “Tour pros hit the ball long because their launch conditions are
comprised of fast ball speed with a high launch angle and low spin-rate. The
Tour Burner driver is engineered to help the average golfer generate tour-
caliber launch conditions in order to promote tour-caliber distance.”
In my experience the view at setup is confidence building and day-in-and-
day-out it performances better than any driver I have found. The Tour Burner
is well worth considering if you are in the market for a new driver. It’s in
stores and green grass shops carrying a street price of $400.
