Secret weapon
Tour Edge Exotics CB4 fairways
By ED TRAVIS
April 8, 2011 - Tour Edge rolled out the Exotics brand
a few years ago and one the first Exotics clubs to
get noticed, especially by good golfers, was in 2007
with the CB2 fairway. The CB3 followed in 2010 and
soon the CB series gained the reputation as being
LONG…REALLY LONG. This evaluation though
subjective has been validated time and again by PGA
Tour players, who put them in their bags even
though Tour Edge does not pay anyone to play their
clubs.
With typical modesty after their success with the CB
fairways, Tour Edge for 2011 followed up with the CB4
which they guarantee to be the longest fairway, period.
This isn’t hype – they do guarantee that’s what you will
find. See their website for details.
So why does the CB series and particularly the CB4
fairway hit the ball so far and why have they become
almost a secret weapon for better players?
Dissecting the CB4 shows its construction is different
starting with a “cup face” rather than a flat piece of
metal welded to the edges of the clubhead crown and
sole.

The edges of the face form a cup which wraps around
so the edges are not near the hitting area and in fact
become part of the crown and sole. Additionally
Exotics CB4s seams are not welded. A chemical
bonding technique called combo-brazing is used
instead resulting in a significant weight saving, weight
that then is repositioned to give better performance.
The CB4 3-wood has a smallish (170cc) pear-shaped
head and its center of gravity has been placed higher
which imparts less spin to the ball for, you guessed it,
more distance. But the story doesn’t end there…Tour
Edge uses a titanium alloy for the cup face with
scientifically engineereed variations in the face
thickness to produce lots of trampoline effect, the
result is again more distance.
The CB4’s suggested retail with an Aldila RIP 70
Sigma graphite shaft is $299 in a 13 degree 3+ wood,
15 degree 3 wood, 16.5 degree 4 wood and 18 degree
5 wood.
A secret weapon? Could be. But from personal use
and the comments of good players, it won’t be a
secret for long.
