Titleist updates AP iron line
New Pinnacles too
By ED TRAVIS
Titleist makes the Pro V1 but every good golfer at least
knows about their line of irons. They are very well
regarded and played by many better players.
New APs this fall according to the company are
improvements of the previous version. In the new 712
AP1 and AP2 there’s been a reworking of the head
profile and an adjustment in the weighting for more off-
center-hit forgiveness while retaining the ability to work
the ball.
"When speaking about iron workability, it's important to
dispel the myth that adding forgiveness to an iron
decreases its workability," explained Dan Stone, VP for
Research and Development. "In the golf industry,
when we talk about Moment of Inertia, we're referring
to MOI-y, which is the heel/toe stability of the clubhead
on off-center impacts. The higher the MOI-y, the better
the accuracy and distance on off-center hits. But the
most influential property affecting workability is the
Moment of Inertia around the shaft axis, which is
mainly driven by blade length and the location of the
clubhead's center of gravity from the shaft axis. When
we redesigned the 712 AP irons, we redistributed
weight in the clubhead so that we not only increased
clubhead MOI or forgiveness, we kept blade lengths
the same and maintained the same CG distance from
the shaft axis. This allows players to flight and shape
shots."

Titleist AP2 irons have been a
favorite of better players. The
new 712 AP2s have undergone
several updates to the design.
The Titleist 712 AP1 irons
have a reworked head
profile and will be in shops
Nov. 18
Both APs keep the dual cavity, multiple material
construction and the AP1s have a redesigned
soleplate and integrated tungsten nickel sole. The
AP2s use steel cradle to hold heel and toe tungsten
weights.
The 712 AP1 irons, either left or right hand, go on sale
Nov. 18 at a suggested retail price of $112 per
club/steel, and $135 per club/graphite. 712 AP2 irons
carry a suggested retail of $154 per club/steel and
$175 per club/graphite and the same availability date.
Lastly, though some golfers aren’t aware of it,
Acushnet Company in addition to the best selling
Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x also has another top
selling brand but in the “distance ball category”
…Pinnacle. The two-piece (high velocity, soft
compression core and soft ionomer cover blend)
comes in the Pinnacle Gold and Pinnacle Gold
Ribbon versions for $15.99 per 15-ball pack starting in
October. Pinnacle Gold is offered in bright white and
high optix yellow Pinnacle Gold Ribbon in bright white
and clear pearlescent pink.

Titleist has reworked the popular
Pinnacle ball line for 2012 and
sells them at an attractive price.
