TaylorMade TP irons
Forged irons for everybody
By ED TRAVIS
The TPMB and TPMC models are forged using a 6-step process while the TPCBs
have a cast clubhead with a forged face insert.
“Forged irons are typically devoid of performance technologies," said Bret Wahl,
senior director of iron, wedge and putter development. "Their compact and solid
construction, with thin sole, thin topline, high CG location and little to no offset,
forces a very specific type of impact parameters to hit a good shot, with virtually no
margin for error. The reward for that sacrifice is unparalleled feel and workability.
We took a long, close look into the makeup of forged irons to determine if we
could advance the performance with the use of technology, and we found that we
could."
The TPMB irons have a compact head, a tapered hosel and a very small amount
of offset, really a modern version of the pure blade required by top players while
the TPMCs have a shallow cavity and a slight amount of offset designed for better
golfers preferring the added stability of a muscle cavity.
TPCB irons’ cast head has an undercut cavity and combined with the forged face
make a two-piece iron giving higher handicap golfers with the best of both worlds.
The TPCBs provide the highest moment of inertia of the three models, which
means more forgiveness on off center hits and unlike the MC and MB that are
available only with steel shafts, CBs have a graphite shaft option.
TPMB and TPMC are available in 2-iron through pitching wedge and the TPCB in 3-
iron through attack wedge. An eight iron set has a street price of $900 while the
TPCB irons with graphite shafts are $1,100.

Because of the forging process clubmakers often
place weight cartridges in the hosel to get the proper
balance and swingweight as they progress through
the set. However, hosel weighting affects where the
head’s center of gravity is and to give consistent feel
from long irons to the wedges plus provide the best
performance iron to iron, precise location of the center
of gravity is a must.
TMaG is able to accomplish this with the weight port
on the back of the clubhead rather than a cartridge in
the hosel giving TPs a solid, consistent feel and tour-
quality feedback.
April 4, 2011 - TaylorMade Golf has done a lot of work to engineer forged irons
for a wide spectrum of golfers and succeeded in spades with the Tour
Preferred family. The Muscleback (TPMB), Muscle Cavity (TPMC) and
Cavityback (TPCB) break new ground for TMaG forged irons with the use of a
weight port directly behind the hitting area.
