TaylorMade R11 irons
Adding to the R11 franchise
By ED TRAVIS
Since January the success of the R11 Driver has
allowed TaylorMade Golf Company to gain additional
market share and dominate that segment of the club
business. Therefore it of little surprise when their
latest game-improvement category irons were
announced they would carry the R11 name.

TMaG says, unlike the way irons are designed to help
recreational players the new R11s do not have a big
rear cavity, a thick top line or super wide soles. They
do have a cleaner, less “clunky” look and play with a
softer feel.

"The R11 iron is truly a masterwork of beauty,
technology and performance," said Sean Toulon,
executive vice president. "We've never created an iron
that combines this kind of distance, this kind of
forgiveness, is this easy to launch, and feels and
sounds this soft and solid. And its appearance is
extraordinarily beautiful, a gorgeous blend of smooth,
classic lines and high-tech flourishes."

Taking a cue from TMaG’s forged irons, R11’s have a
rear weight hidden behind a distinctive red badge.
This allows precise swingweighting and placement of
the center of gravity giving consistency of feel club-to-
club. Also used are the now standard Inverted Cone
clubface and progressive shaping of the clubheads for
which Hall of Fame member and TMaG staffer Nick
Faldo provided input.
Knowledgeable golfers know much of what a player
thinks of a club comes from the click he hears at
impact and the feel transmitted up the shaft when the
ball strikes the clubface. Sound and vibration
management (accomplished by placement of a soft
adhesive between the red weight badge and clubface)
therefore were a big part of the R11 design team’s
consideration especially since many less
accomplished golfers who play game-improvement
irons and also use hard cover “distance” golf balls.
Toulon also talked about the looks of the R11 irons.
"There has never been a game-improvement iron that
looks this classically beautiful, that incorporates this
kind of serious performance technology, and which
will fit so many players. The R11 iron is destined to
assume a position among the pantheon of the best of
the best TaylorMade products."

An 8-iron set will carry a street price of $799 with KBS
90 steel shafts or $999 with the Motore graphite shafts
and they will be in shops Sept. 1.
