Izzo Golf's Swami 3000
Inexpensive GPS
By ED TRAVIS
Izzo Golf’s Swami 3000 is really worth consideration
when compared to the crowded field of more
expensive golf GPS units.
It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of a $300 unit
advertised by one or more of golf’s beautiful people. It
is though, a good basic way to know the distance to
the front, back and center of the green…for a
suggested price of $99.99 and no annual fee or
course downloading. It comes with 19,000 courses in
North America preloaded.
David Witkoski, Director of Marketing put it well. “We
have streamlined current technology and have
focused mainly on essential features in an effort to
make SWAMI 3000 truly affordable for all golfers. The
SWAMI 3000 is by far the easiest Golf GPS to use and
our Sirf Star III technology draws accurate
measurements from up to 12 satellites. We believe
our $99.99 price point, now combined with pre-loaded
courses, will allow more golfers to enjoy the benefits
of a Golf GPS while contributing to faster play and
lower scores.”
It’s important to note that all GPS units from the one in
your car to the one in your smart phone use the same
technology and link to the same satellites. No one has
an advantage there. Golf GPS units do have
differences in displays and other features but every
unit uses the same location information.
Izzo has gone the inexpensive route knowing golfers
usually play the majority of golf at the same course or
courses. Certainly that’s true if you belong to a club but
also probably true if you don’t. Most of your rounds are
at a limited number of clubs that you know fairly well
so not having the exact carry yardage over a hazard or
the distance a pin is located from the side of the green
is probably not too necessary.
In actuality, given the skill level of most amateurs, all
that information is probably overkill.
One very nice feature of the Swami 3000 is the LCD
letters and numbers are large and visible in direct sun
light, which cannot be said for some other distance
measuring devices.
The Swami 3000 may be found in shops and online
with a street price of $89.
