For one company in Scottsdale, Ariz., the economic
times has started what they believe is a better way to
play golf with “Pure Grips.” Named as one of the five hot
new products at last January’s PGA Merchandise Show,
Pure Grips has a good thing going during this
economically difficult and uncertain time.

Co-founders, Mike Smith, Wes Brasher, and Jim Curry
designed an all-weather golf grip featuring the key
attributes every golfer needs; durability, performance, and
tackiness guaranteed for 12 months. All three are avid
golfers, with Brasher and Smith being friends from
college days.

“We were extremely well received at the PGA Show, our
first, and people are calling us for information and
product,” smiles Smith, a former golf professional. Burt
Rodgers, VP of Manufacturing and Wendy Osmundson,
General Manger, round out the Pure Grips management
team.

Two canine friends will greet guests at the Scottsdale
facility, Morgan and Jake, twelve and four-year old
Chesapeake Bay retrievers. Inside flat shoestring-like
rubber, which comes in 300-500 pound pallets, is feed
through a machine, heated, and injected into molds. In
two minutes the still warm-to-the-touch grips come out of
the injection mold and are trimmed. Next they printed with
rubber paint, keeping the 100% natural rubber product
100% rubber! Custom logo painting is also offered.

It’s true not many golf products are USA made, but Pure
Grips are, using virgin rubber produced for them in Calif.,
no plasticizers or fillers. This makes a grip that is
durable with a range of feel depending on the model of
grip selected and tight manufacturing tolerances give
consistent weight and thickness.

PGA Tour player Matt Jones has signed with Pure Grips
and pros on all tours are using the product.
In another innovative move, Pure Grips has moved
beyond tape and solvent installation with a unique to
Pure Grips a fitting gun operated by compressed air.
The gun is so fast an entire set of clubs can be
regripped in ten minutes. Once on the shaft Pure Grips
do not twist, slide or move even without tape underlay.

This hot product in a hot desert lacks no “cooling” from
the market at the present time. “We are growing so
quickly; we need new employees and a larger building,”
remarks Smith. “All these things will be happening
soon. It’s all new to us and we are a little bit surprised,
but it is a good place to be.”
