In the battle for golf ball market share against the segment dominating
position of Acushnet Golf, other ball makers have come up with some
pretty strange ideas - remember yellow balls? One recent idea though
which was definitely not strange is Bridgestone Golf’s ball-fitting
program. In three years the company has sponsored 50,000 plus fittings
giving golfers get hi-tech help to determine which golf ball is best for their
individual swing and game.
The ball-fitting idea produced two significant results. Bridgestone
doubled their market share and the popular B330-RX ball was conceived.
Analyzing data from thousands of ball-fittings Bridgestone came to the
conclusion a so-called ‘new category’ of ball was needed; one with “tour-
level performance around the greens, yet was engineered to optimize
distance off the tee for a moderate swing speed.” Thus was born the
B330-RX which may have been the most successful ball launch since
the Titleist ProV1.
This year Bridgestone updates the Tour B330-RX and adds a new three-
piece Urethane cover B330-RXS for players with swing speeds under
105 mph.
