TMaG Raises the Bar
Adjustable clubs are all the rage.
TaylorMade Golf was in the forefront when they
introduced Moveable Weight Technology (MWT) in the r7
Quad five years ago and for 2009 the Carlsbad, Calif.
company has raised the bar for its competition with
something named Flight Control Technology (FCT) in the
new R9 line.
The idea is ingenious; combine the MWT feature of
adjusting clubhead weight distribution using tungsten
plugs with FCT, adjusting the club head open to square
to closed at address. FCT allows the golfer to change
the face angle, loft and lie with the twist of a wrench.
And it’s quick to do, just loosen the bolt on the sole of the
club head attached to the end of the shaft, move the shaft
to the desired position and retighten the bolt.
However, one might reasonably ask, “Why would I want
to change the shaft orientation?”
The answer is to give the golfer the trajectory and ball
flight curvature he wants, i.e., a shot that can move right
to left up to thirty yards to ten yards left to right. So he now
can have a little cut for accuracy or have the tendency to
produce a draw perhaps compensation for a somewhat
imperfect swing. Like I said ingenious.
It’s the combination of the MWT and FCT makes such a
range of ball flight curvature and ball height trajectory
possible. In addition TMaG has joined MWT and FCT in
their r9 fairway woods and Rescue clubs as well.
My experience in actual use is this all works. While some
may think MWT + FCT creates an overload of variables,
in practice it’s very nice to know the range of ball flights is
there when you need it.
