SkyCaddie SG5
GPS devices are helpful even if most of your rounds are on the same course since guesswork is
removed. Knowing the distance to hazards, the pin or the front/back of the green is obviously
devices on the market all seem to do the job, some perhaps with varying degrees of success and
there are a couple l really like.
However one GPS device in particular has earned its way to be a permanent accessory in my bag
and it’s the SkyGolf SkyCaddie SG5. After rounds using just about every one of the competing
devices (sometimes as many as three at a time) I found the SG5 is a clear winner. It’s certainly not
the least expensive and does require an additional cost of annual membership, so this isn’t just
opting for the cheap way out.
From comparative experience an important plus for the SkyCaddie SG5 is the easy to read display.
The letters are large enough for those of us who usually need close-up help with fine print but in
bright sunshine the display is still readable. Secondly I like the feature which allows estimating the
pin location on the green using a cursor and crosshairs, so in addition to front and back yardages
you also have a good idea how far it is to the flag, not just the center of the green.
SkyGolf, makers of the SkyCaddie, is the only one of the companies who actually puts a man on the
ground with a GPS mapping unit to measure the distances to hazards, greens, etc. In side by side
comparison with other units (those that get distances from satellite photos) there are sometimes
differences in yardages, for example to carry a bunker or water hazard…and sometimes that
difference is significant. After checking with a laser range finder the SG5 seems to provide more
accurate distances. Unscientific, yes. Anecdotal certainly, but still enough of a factor to make the
SG5 a permanent resident in my golf bag.
The big question though is now that I’ve found the distance where do I find my swing?
