Golf News & Opinion
Nov. 10, 2008 - Bushnell Outdoor Products knows the business of
distance measurement on the golf course. After all, for years they’ve
made the most popular models of laser range finders.
But as GPS technology-based devices became available Bushnell
stayed on the side lines and didn’t enter the melee between new
companies vying for market share with often less than well thought out
business plans. I had wondered why Bushnell hadn’t jumped into the
GPS device market but the opportunity never came up to ask the
powers-that-be and now it doesn’t make any difference.
Bushnell has brought to market the Yardage Pro and it’s not just
another GPS range finder. In fact it has two distinct advantages to
recommend it.
First, it’s simple. Big display numbers make yardage to the front, back
and middle of the green easy to read and those distances, when it
comes right down to it, are all you need. Devices trumpeting they
provide read outs ‘To Carry Bunker’ or ‘Lay Up To 100 Yards’ are
overkill most of the time and usually are not as readable.
The second big advantage of the Yardage Pro is the $199 price.
Bushnell obviously analyzed the competition’s technology (everybody
uses the same U.S. Government satellites), reviewed the pricing and
decided a low price unit would steal the show. The Yardage Pro is
from $50 to $300 less than competing devices. Plus, after
downloading course data to your PC, it is yours to keep so there’s no
need to re-subscribe (Bushnell charges $34.95 a year for 100
courses) just to keep download information available.
Easy to use, and less expensive are a good combination but just in
case you’re still not convinced…due to my lack of technical
competence I had to call the Bushnell tech staff and was very
impressed. A fellow named Steve was both friendly and solved my
problem quickly and correctly. In this world of dreadful customer
service which may not be even located in this country nor speak
understandable American, Steve was refreshing.
The bottom line is, if you’re hankering for a GPS measuring device, try
the Yardage Pro.
