Golf News & Opinion

At the 2008 PGA Merchandise Show there were a number of examples of the
latest in technology on display but none more useful than the uPro from uPlay,
LLC based in Carlsbad, Ca.

When you first pick the unit up two things are apparent – its’ size and the
outstanding color display of the hole being played. Like other GPS devices, the
uPro handles the tasks of yardage to the green or other pre-measured locations
easily and quickly. But because the uPro uses actual images of the course the
user can see on the display he is able to measure distances for lay ups or carry
plus by moving the cursor on the green’s image get a more accurate yardage to
the pin rather than front-middle-back.

The ‘fly over’ image of holes means no more blind shots which have always been
a draw back of laser devices. uPro is intuitive to use, just move the cursor to the
spot you want to hit your shot and the yardage appears.

Created by Joseph Balardeta and Scott Denton this is a logical next step up from
conventional GPS and laser devices on the market. Balardeta said, “It was our
goal to develop a distance-measuring device with the most advanced features
and optimum usability. The uPro allows golfers to see the course and the game
from a whole new perspective.”

Another and by no means the only great feature is the cost of $399, right in the
middle of competing devices with the added benefit of no yearly fee to down load
course data. At present there approximately 2,000 courses in the data base for
down load through your PC to the uPro at $2 each in standard mode and $10
each in ProMode. uPlay says about 600 courses are being added to the database
per month.
