Confidence Measures Tour Edge XCG
Feb. 25, 2008 - Tour Edge Golf has an interesting promotion in
progress, they guarantee their new Exotics XCG and CB2 fairway
nice idea but if you’re going to boast you better have the
performance to back it up.
And they do…at least as far as the XCG model.
It's now a permanent resident in my bag having replaced the
previous Exotics model that I liked a lot and which had replaced
an absolutely great TaylorMade V-steel 3-wood. In my opinion the
new XCG is worth a serious look by every serious golfer.
The idea behind the XCG is titanium is good…good for drivers
and fairways but when used for fairways the metal's lightweight
means head size becomes so large the center of gravity moves
upward and in fact becomes too high. Fairways built from all
titanium therefore are basically un-hittable except perhaps from
the most perfect of lies.
Tour Edge’s solution is simplicity itself; make the face, part of
crown and leading edge of the sole from titanium and the rest of
the body from steel. This keeps the center of gravity back and
towards the sole while providing the benefits of titanium to
actually hit the ball. The titanium and steel are mated without
welds using a technique called combo-brazing which also helps
the center of gravity placement.
As I said above, I believe this all works, an opinion based on the
ten or so rounds I’ve been using the XCG. It’s definitely longer
and easy to hit. Is it 20-yards? I don’t know but if you could
measure confidence it would be a lot more than 20-yards.
The Exotics XCG is $349 and available shafts include the
Graphite Design X-Quad, Aldila DVS or UST V2.
