Golf News & Opinion
Mar. 12, 2008 - Today, iron design is all about moment of inertia or MOI, a term
impact when the impact is not in the exact center of the club face.
Clay Long, who has designed Jack Nicklaus’ clubs for 25-years knows about MOI.
In fact he has a patent on the idea used in the new Nicklaus Polarity irons but let
Long tell the story.
“Extreme weight distribution keeps club heads stable, resists twisting and
therefore makes it easier to hit the golf ball, straighter” says Long. “I patented (U.
S. patent # 5,335,914) this technology a few years ago, but the emphasis at that
time was not on Moment of Inertia (M.O.I.) Now, of course, the buzz in the industry
is M.O.I. With that in mind, my patented technology was worth a new look.”
“I tweaked the concept by distributing the weight more evenly from toe to hosel to
achieve extreme weight distribution with maximum twist resistance and the
highest M.O.I. for an iron in the market to date.”
“We all know the importance of a great drive,” continued Long, “But our customers
are asking for equipment to help get to the green. That’s exactly what we’ve
achieved with our patented Extreme Polar Weight Distribution technology that
creates an extremely high M.O.I. and Maximum Twist Resistance.”
“Traditional weighting on irons is toe to heel,” points out Long. “With our new
irons, weighting has extreme distribution from the toe to the hosel. This extreme
polar weight distribution provides Maximum Twist Resistance and a tighter shot
dispersion due to the highest M.O.I. of the clubs we tested on the market.”
The really unique feature of the Polarity design is the weight added to the hosel.
This produces the high MOI making for very forgiving clubs when the hit is less
than perfect without having to make the club head overly large, i.e., not too much
distance form heel to toe.
Polarity MTR Iron sets come 3–PW with an MSRP of $450 to $550 depending on
the shaft selected. Also available are a Plus set with 3 and 4 Claw hybrids ($500
to $600) and a Super set including 3-, 4- and 5- Claw hybrids ($550 to $650).
