GEL Putters Make the Cut
August 04, 2008 - Each year at the PGA Merchandise Show there are
dozens of new putters on display. Some are from the established
makers but many are from new companies who believe they have the
next great wand to solve golfer’s putting woes.
At the 2007 Show Groove Equipment Limited, a.k.a. GEL, was in the
latter category with a new line of grooved putters and since has
attracted a modest following. According to independent testing the GEL
put head to head with other popular putters. Al most players know
generating forward roll is key to both distance control and getting the
ball started on the intended line.
“In general, a putt is more susceptible to stray off-target during the skid,
while a rolling putt will hold its intended line and improve the chances
of going in the hole,” said Alec Pettigrew Managing Director of Groove
Equipment LTD. “Additionally, because the ball comes off the face
straighter and with more forward roll it is easier to control distance, one
of the leading factors in three-putting.”
Grooves on a putter face are not there to produce backspin as they are
on irons but to reduce the skid from putter head to ball contact thus
making the ball true. GEL has eight men’s models and two for the
ladies each with a suggested retail of $165.
