Cobra’s Latest Pro CB & MB Plus UFi Irons
PGA Tour at the World Golf Championship CA Championship at Doral
last week but he did it playing new irons from sponsor Cobra.
The Cobra Pro MB and the Pro CB were developed with lots of input
from Ogilvy and other Cobra tour staff players like J.B. Holmes who
also plays the Pro CB and dusted Woods at his home course during
the recent made-for-real-state-sales Tavistock Cup. Both have forged
heads and you guessed it the CB have a cavity back design while the
MB are traditional muscle backs.
Both models are very nice looking and stress playability and workability
that better players require. The CBs come with the Royal Precision
Rifle Project X 5.5 Steel Shaft to promote a high launch while the MBs
are found with the True Temper Dynamic Gold S300 stock shafts.
According to Scott Rice, Director of Research and Development,
“Accomplished players desire different trajectories, so we provide two
technical iron options by adjusting the blade profile, sole and hosel
sections of the Pro CB and Pro MB irons for unique, optimal ball flights.
The lower center of gravity (CG) in the Pro CB helps slightly increase
the ball flight trajectory, while the higher CG in the Pro MB results in a
mid-launch and slightly lower ball flight.”
Look for them at your favorite golf retailer any day with the Pro CB and
Pro MB carrying a suggested retail of $1,049 for 3-PW however street
prices are about $800.
Cobra UFi Game Improvement Irons
As is our practice for those types of clubs regular golfers should
consider, we waited to write about the King Cobra UFi until we had the
opportunity to play with them. That having been accomplished and
even though they have been on the market for since last fall we thought
a report would be useful to our readers.
According to President Jeff Harmet, the UFi’s bring together metal and
polymer to achieve playability and forgiveness unlike any other Cobra
irons produced. “In developing the UFi irons, the objective of the Cobra
R&D iron team was to utilize advanced technology and design to
achieve the highest level of forgiveness and playability at any cost,”
says Harmet.
UFi (Ultimate Forgiveness irons) have a metal matrix face insert and
polymer topline along with tungsten weighting in the heel and toe
within a steel alloy body. As Scott Rice, Cobra’s Director of R&D put it,
“The UFi is the most technologically advanced iron Cobra has ever
developed. A key design element in the UFi is the metal matrix face
insert. This unique alloy produces a face insert that is 65% lighter than
steel which allows us to shift weight out to the perimeter of the
clubhead, as well as shift the CG lower and further back to produce the
highest MOI and lowest CG of any iron we have ever developed.”
The matrix face insert is 65% lighter than steel and 35% lighter than
titanium by utilizing nano-sized particles of scandium imbedded in the
metal’s structure plus a vibration dampening cavity plate backed with a
urethane layer.
All this adds up to UFi’s being as advertised, very forgiving and easy to
hit especially for players who can be really helped by clubs in the
‘game-improvement’ category.
UFi’s are available with steel shafts or Graphite Design YS-55+, YS-
60+ or Nippon NS 900 XH graphite shafts in sets of 4-iron through gap
wedge. Cobra has placed suggested retail prices per set of $1,240 in
graphite and $1,125 in steel but street prices are a couple hundred
dollars less.
